Joint Appointment between the British Horseracing Authority and the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine & Science. We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Pharmacologist for a unique collaborative initiative between the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine & Science.
This is a newly-created position, formally employed by the University with co-funding from the BHA. The role will be based in Nottingham and will involve travel to BHA sites in Newmarket, London and elsewhere. For the BHA you will be involved in research into the ADME / DMPK profiles of legitimate equine medical drugs, as well as some work on performance enhancers and potential doping substances that racehorses might be exposed to.
You will also hold an academic appointment in the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine & Science as a Non-clinical Lecturer or Associate Professor with both research and undergraduate teaching responsibilities. Your research need not necessarily be wholly related to horses or horseracing, but must be broadly compatible with the role of Pharmacology in the Veterinary School. As with other staff, you will be expected to develop your own research funding, which may come from the BHA or elsewhere.
For the work with the BHA you will work closely with their Veterinary Adviser (Medication) and the Director of Equine Science & Welfare, analysing pharmacokinetic research data and the published work of others in order to refine the BHA's medication control regulations and formulate its advice to racehorse Vets and Trainers in order to maintain safe and fair racing. The BHA allocates significant funding for research, and you will play a key role in ensuring this is well spent. You will become an active and influential member of the international horseracing regulatory community, sharing knowledge and best practices between international authorities and contributing to collaborative initiatives such as the harmonisation of global medication control guidelines.
Candidates should have a strong technical background in research DMPK and/or Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology, including quantitative methodology and extrapolation, which may have been gained in the Animal Health, CRO or Human Pharmaceutical industry, or in Academia.
Candidates from industry should be experienced in late drug discovery and/or early drug development and will be familiar with adapting studies and extrapolating results between different animal species. Experience with veterinary species is desirable but not essential. Candidates from academia should be similarly experienced in a range of species and should have a track record of applied research with commercial relevance, ideally including collaboration with industrial partners.
All candidates should hold Veterinary Medicine and/or Pharmacology degrees and have a scientific profile with a publication record and current knowledge and research interests that can be seen to be directly or indirectly relevant to this area of veterinary medicine and science. Specific expertise in equine pharmacology is not necessarily required, although some experience and/or interest in horses in general or horseracing in particular would certainly be beneficial.
