The Wellcome Trust is dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. We support the brightest people and best research with the aim of advancing biomedical research and the medical humanities.
As Head of Pathogens, Immunology and Population Health, you will lead a scientifically qualified team to build, develop, enhance and manage the portfolio of research grants within these fields. Reporting to the Director of Science Funding and working with the other Science Funding Heads as part of the senior management team, you will be responsible for advancing the Focus areas and Challenges set out in the Wellcome Trust Strategic Plan 2010-2020.
The focus of the role is to identify, encourage, promote and support the best researchers with the brightest ideas, and the vision to innovate, take risks and explore fundamental questions - in particular those inspired by the challenges of infectious disease, of development, ageing and chronic disease and of the interplay between the environment, nutrition and health. You will also play a key role in advancing the Wellcome Trust's strategy of accelerating the application of research to improve health, through fostering high-quality clinical and public health research in the UK and overseas, and the uptake of research to policy and practice.
To succeed in this high profile role, you will possess a strong record of leading research, combined with a background in immunology, infectious disease, population based research or public health. You will have experience in raising grant support and/or significant knowledge of the grant funding area.
The ability to gain the respect of the leading scientists in your own and other fields, both nationally and internationally, is vital. You will be a skilled people manager, with experience of training, mentoring, developing and inspiring staff. Strong networking and collaboration skills are essential and you will be comfortable working across teams, divisions and organisations.
